Towards the end of my reference shift today I noticed something about the researchers in our reading room. The six researchers in the room at around 2:40pm were all male. They were a diverse group in terms of the reasons for their visits, collections they were using, and their affiliations. Two are on-going researchers who I’ve come to enjoy seeing in the reading room. But, are our researchers usually mostly male? I don’t remember noticing a gender difference either way over the past few months.

It would be interesting to learn the break down of use of our collections by gender. Would this be different compared to other Special Collections departments around the country?

I’m going to try to pay attention on upcoming shifts to see if I notice any short term trends.
